Don’t forget your Sox!

Are you ready to believe in baseball magic again?
If you’re a Cubs fan like me, it’s Opening Day Part II and there’s plenty of time to recover from our 0-2 start. After all, it’s not like my favorite team is going to lose ALL of their games this season, right?
And while we’re on the topic of losing all of their games this season, let’s take a moment to appreciate the other Chicago baseball team, the White Sox. As a baseball lover, I’ve got some serious respect for this South Side squad, and here’s why:
- They’re my dad’s favorite team (hi pops!)
- They play in a stadium with an incredible city view
- They were twice owned by the legendary Bill Veeck, baseball’s most innovative owner
Let’s talk about Veeck for a moment. His legacy has a lot to do with why I am so Sox-friendly. Among his amazing innovations
- Adding Players’ Names to Uniforms
- Creating an exploding scoreboard
- Hosting Grandstand Managers Night
- Pioneering Bat Day
- Introducing curtain calls after home runs
- Even having players (grown men!) wear shorts as uniforms!
Maybe of greatest importance, it was Veeck who convinced/tricked legendary announcer Harry Caray to lead a stadium full of fans in singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh inning of Sox games, which Caray took to a whole new level after he joined the Cubs broadcasting booth.
Baseball isn’t just a game – it’s a story, a tradition, a connection. Whether you’re a Cubs fan, a Sox fan, or just a baseball lover, today is about hope, possibility, and the magic of the game.
Play ball!
