Dare to Compare

What’s the most cringe-worthy tagline you’ve ever seen?

A store near me has a big, retro-style sign in the window that says, “Dare to Compare.” You’ve probably seen similar slogans, banal bursts of poster puffery meant to sound bold but end up feeling… boring. Uninspired.

It reminds me of the taglines my former boss at the shopping mall used to come up with, like “Spring into Fashion” (in the springtime) and “Fall into Fashion” (you guessed it… in the fall). “Come visit Santa” was another favorite, and it was my job to make sure the big letters on our big outdoor mall marquees spelled those words right.

But let’s be real: comparing isn’t daring at all. It’s logical, especially for big purchases like cars or furniture. Spending large sums of money without comparing? Now that’s daring (and probably not in a good way).
