Lego of Your Plan
I started last year (2024, for those of us already overwhelmed by 2025) with big plans: In early January, I was going to kick off a four-week online course on guiding people toward finding the right mentor and developing a productive relationship. Mentor in a Month! My audience would be people needing to gain or regain control over their careers. The mentees.
I had it all planned out. I knew what the final product would look like.
That didn’t happen.
Instead, in the past year I have:
- Developed a workshop based on one of the lessons
- Created a second workshop meant to fill in gaps in that first workshop, which has become my main workshop
- Wrote a book for mentees called Mentorvention that I just published (link: https://a.co/d/67qFh6O) based on the course I originally meant to teach almost exactly a year ago.
I used the pieces in the box, but it didn’t quite look like the picture on the box.
As the vintage Lego box shows, that’s how things used to be.
And I couldn’t be happier.
Maybe there isn’t one perfect picture. Maybe the real picture is in my head, still waiting to be drawn.
For now, I’m having fun playing with the pieces, creating as I go, and figuring it out along the way. Seeing what I can create.
Then I’ll draw the picture. Once I know what it really looks like.
How about you? Are you working top-down (start with the picture) or bottom-up (start with the pieces)? Would you ever switch it up?
What works for you?
