The Pain of Picking Priorities
Years ago, I faced a dilemma: rush to get my kids to daycare when my wife couldn’t—or attend a last-minute 8 AM meeting at work.
I chose my kids.
The meeting went on without me, though my boss gave me a “talking to” that made me think I’d wrecked my career. Spoiler alert: I hadn’t. Years later, when I was shown the door, it was for entirely different (and understandable) reasons.
Now, looking back, I laugh. There shouldn’t have even been a conflict. We’re talking about my children. End of discussion.
Recently, I faced a similar situation: another high-stakes meeting clashing with family responsibilities. This time, the stakes felt even higher—for my job (but not my career) and my family.
The other side wouldn’t budge. Too bad.
The meeting will go on without me.
(And now they can just record it for me.)
What matters to you is what matters.
When you look back in 20 years, will you regret your choice? Or will you know, like I do, that in your big picture, you made the right call?
It’s not always easy, but it’s always right.
What do you think?
Let’s hear it: Would you have chosen differently?
